Your account will enable you to view any scans performed at SVHS within the past 12 months. Please note that scan reports can only be shared with the requesting doctor or relevant medical practitioner. Our staff are available to assist you with setting up your account.

At St Vincent&#8217;s Hospital Sydney Medical Imaging, we offer same-day appointments for urgent and some routine examinations. All results can be delivered to your referrer electronically.

The car park at St Vincent’s Public Hospital is operated by Point Parking, with entry and exit via Victoria Street (through the main hospital foyer). Disability access is available, with restricted lift and ramp facilities. Limited metered street parking is also nearby. Public transport is convenient, with bus stops on Victoria Street and Oxford Street, as well as Kings Cross Station within walking distance. Please allow sufficient time to park or travel so you can complete registration before your scheduled appointment

X-ray imaging typically takes around 5-15 minutes to complete. Our expert radiographers conduct your X-ray, which is then reported by our experienced radiologists and shared electronically with your referring doctor or specialist. You may be asked to lie down or sit in different positions depending on what is being examined. Sometimes you may need to wear a medical gown or remove jewellery, buttons, or other items of clothing in order to complete the X-ray.

You can access your scanned images through an online account using <a href="https://myvue.imaging.svhs.org.au/">My Vue PACS.</a> Your account will enable you to view any scans performed at SVHS within the past 12 months. X-rays are one of the most common medical imaging methods and are offered as a walk-in service; no appointment is required. An X-ray is a type of radiation that is sent through the body. X-rays are absorbed differently by various structures, such as bones and soft tissues, the different absorption rates are used to create an image.

Some examinations require specific preparation. Complete our booking form to ensure your visit with us goes smoothly. Once your booking form is received, our team will contact you to confirm an appointment.

An experienced sonographer will perform your examination and will instruct you throughout the process. Most scans are performed with the patient laying on a bed. A water-based gel is applied to the area being scanned and a hand-held scanner, called an ultrasound transducer, will be used to undertake the imaging.
Ultrasound scans typically take 20-60 minutes. There are no after-effects and you can resume your normal activities afterwards.
You may ask the sonographer performing the ultrasound questions during the examination and they can assist you where possible. The results of the ultrasound will be reported by a radiologist and sent electronically to your referring doctor.

An ultrasound is a safe and painless examination that uses soundwaves to show images of the inside of the body. It is performed by a sonographer. There is no radiation involved for an ultrasound.
At St Vincent’s, we use ultrasound to image a range of body regions including the abdomen, pelvis (for both males and females), thyroid and neck, blood vessels, and musculoskeletal soft tissues. We also perform a variety of interventional procedures including steroid procedures, drainages, and biopsies.

CT Scan

CT scans are customised for each individual, meaning no two scans are alike. Before the scan you might receive an injection of a contrast medium to see certain parts of the body more clearly.
During the procedure, you&#8217;ll typically lie on a bed that moves into the CT scanner. The doughnut-shaped scanner rotates around a specific section of your body as you pass through it.
To ensure clear images, it&#8217;s essential to lie still and breathe normally during the scan. You may be instructed to breathe in, breathe out, or hold your breath at certain moments. The scan generally takes around 5-15 minutes to complete.
If you receive a contrast injection you may experience sensations of warmth or unusual tastes, which should stop within a few minutes of receiving the injection.

A CT (Computed Tomography) scan is a specialised X-ray technique that shows images of inside of the body. The CT scanner can show detailed images of bones, tissues, organs and blood vessels.
CT scans are often preferred when doctors need to visualise parts of the body that may not be visible in standard X-rays. CT scans are valuable tools for diagnosing medical conditions and assisting doctors in planning appropriate treatments.

Many types of CT scans require an injection of a special contrast medium. Let our team know if you’re pregnant or have any allergies to contrast dyes.

When arriving, we require you to complete a safety questionnaire and discuss it with our nurse or radiographer to ensure you can proceed with the scan.
You will be asked to remove all jewellery and items from your pockets. You may be asked to remove some of your clothing and wear a hospital gown. 
You will be asked to lie down on the scanner bed and a device will be placed around the part of your body that is being scanned. The bed will move into the scanner. During the scan you will hear loud knocking and tapping sounds. We can give you earplugs and/or headphones to wear. If at any time you become uncomfortable you will have a buzzer to communicate with the MRI staff. It is important that you remain still throughout the MRI  to obtain clear images.
MRI scans typically last 20 to 60 minutes. The examination doesn’t involve radiation exposure and is generally safe for most patients. In some cases, you might need an injection of MRI contrast (dye). After the scan, you can resume your normal activities. Your doctor will discuss the results and any necessary next steps.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to take pictures of the body’s internal structures. MRIs provide images of cartilage, bone, muscle, ligaments, tendons, nerves, discs, and soft tissue. 
A key benefit of MRI scans that it provides detailed images without radiation. Our expert staff and cutting-edge technology ensure a high standard of care for our patients during this proceedure.

A stereotactic head frame will be placed on your head, and you will receive a local anaesthetic. You need to lie very still in the MR scanner. Focussed ultrasound beams will be sent through the brain, intersecting at a single point in the thalamus to destroy the tremor-causing cells. This process will be monitored using the MRI, and our team can adjust the strength of the ultrasound beams as they move over the area needing treatment. After treatment, a contrast agent will be administered through an intravenous catheter, and a final series of MR pictures will be taken to assess the effectiveness of the targeted treatment.

MRI-guided focused ultrasound is a technology that combines ultrasound and is guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This non-invasive treatment is used for essential tremors and can penetrate the skull without making an incision. Most of our patients have reported significant improvement in symptoms almost immediately after a single session.

Interventional Radiology

When receiving an Interventional Radiology treatment, you can expect a minimally invasive procedure that utilises advanced imaging techniques to diagnose and treat various medical conditions.
Before the treatment, you may need to undergo certain diagnostic tests and follow specific instructions, such as fasting or adjusting medications. For most procedures, you will need to wear a hospital gown and remove any jewellery or metal objects.
In the procedure room, you will be positioned comfortably on a table. The radiologist will use imaging guidance, such as X-ray, CT, or Ultrasound, to visualise the targeted area.
After the procedure, you will be instructed whether follow-up care is required. Recovery times can vary depending on your procedure and individual medical history. Preparation instructions will be provided to you at the time of your booking.

Interventional Radiology (IR) uses advanced imaging techniques, such as X-rays, CT, and Ultrasound, to perform invasive procedures for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Instead of traditional open surgery, Interventional Radiologists use small incisions and specialised instruments to diagnose and treat various medical conditions.
This innovative approach offers several advantages over conventional surgical methods. These benefits include better pain management, shorter recovery times, lower risk of complications, and less damage to surrounding tissues. Interventional Radiology can aid in diagnosing and treating various conditions, including vascular diseases, cancer, kidney and liver disorders, and urological issues.

Interventional Radiology

FLUROSCOPY

You may be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove any jewellery or metal objects. During your procedure, you may be asked to lie, sit, stand or roll depending on the imaging requirements. If the procedure requires swallowing fluid, you will be asked to take a mouthful and hold it in your mouth until you are instructed to swallow. Procedures requiring joint injections may require you to remain lying or sitting in one position for an extended period.
Most fluoroscopy scans take 30-60 minutes. Following joint or spinal injections, you should have someone escort you home.

Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body parts like an X-Ray movie. A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined. The beam is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail.
You may be asked to eat or drink a contrast material during a fluoroscopy procedure. A contrast material helps improve the visibility of specific organs or areas in your body and provides a clearer, more detailed image for your doctor to analyse.
Fluoroscopy is used to examine the gastro-intestinal tract, spine, joints, the urinary system and for minor procedures.

Theranostics & Nuclear Medicine

The theranostics and nuclear medicine department offers a full range of PET and conventional nuclear medicine procedures, in addition to a number of theranostic therapy options, many still in trial form. The department works in close collaboration with the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, Oncology trials unit, Garvan institute of medical research, St Vincent&#8217;s Private and Public Hospitals, and St Vincent&#8217;s Clinic to provide the best possible environment for high quality clinical care and clinical research.
The Theranostic &amp; Nuclear Medicine service at St. Vincent&#8217;s Hospital operates from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Fridays and has an on-call, after hours service for emergencies. Please note the Theranostic &amp; Nuclear Medicine service is not part of the Medical Imaging Department.
